TEA Platform

The Trustworthy and Ethical Assurance (TEA) platform, developed by researchers at The Alan Turing Institute and University of York, is an open-source, community-focused initiative. It's designed to help anyone involved in creating or using data-driven technologies – from developers to the public – confidently demonstrate that these technologies uphold important ethical principles like fairness, explainability, or safety. The platform tackles the complex challenge of how project teams can provide clear, justified evidence that such principles have been considered and met throughout a technology's entire lifecycle, from initial design to deployment.

The TEA platform offers a systematic way to address these challenges through three core components. Firstly, the TEA Tool is an interactive, graphical software that helps teams build "assurance cases." Think of an assurance case as a structured argument, clearly showing the ethical goals of a technology, the specific properties that support these goals, and the evidence backing up these claims. Secondly, the TEA Framework provides learning resources and guidance, making the process of creating these assurance cases more accessible to people from various backgrounds, regardless of their technical expertise.

Finally, the TEA Community fosters collaboration and shared learning. Developing ethical technology is not a solo effort; it benefits immensely from diverse perspectives. The community aspect helps in identifying key ethical concerns, sharing best practices and examples, collectively evaluating the strength of assurance arguments, and continuously improving the TEA platform itself. By bringing together these tools, resources, and a collaborative environment, the TEA platform aims to make the development and communication of trustworthy and ethical technology more robust, transparent, and inclusive.
